approved during 1930, many mothers attending the Clinic made
their own arrangements to obtain the help of suitable women whose

8. INSTITUTIONAL TREATMENT, etc.
In addition to the six cases admitted to Brookfield Hospital and
the two cases admitted to Brookscroft, and already referred to, two
cases were sent by your Committee for convalescent home treatment,
namely, one to Southborne and one to Mayfield.
Instruments were supplied in two cases.
9. HOSPITAL ACCOMMODATION FOR
CONFINEMENTS.
(a) Of 1,705 notified births where information was available,
1,285 occurred at home and 420, or 24.6 per cent., in Institutions.
There is thus no question as to the urgent need of adequate
maternity beds in the Borough. The plans for the proposed Municipal
Maternity Home of 30 beds are in course of revision to comply
with the Ministry's requirements.
(b) The County Medical Officer kindly states that there are six
Nursing Homes registered under the 1927 Act, which is administered
by the Essex County Council, and that all have arrangements for a
Certified Midwife to attend cases of confinement. The total
maximum number of Maternity beds is 18.
10. ESSEX COUNTY NURSING ASSOCIATION.
The Nurses' Home at Carisbrooke Road functions as a branch of
the main Home in Leytonstone. The local Staff is as follows:—
1 Sister in Charge, 2 Certified Midwives, 1 General Nurse, and
1 Pupil Midwife.
After June 30th, 1931, the Walthamstow Home will be an independent
unit with a similar staff, less the pupil midwife. In
addition, registration is being sought for the provision of two
Maternity beds.
Sister Ross states that the following work was done during 1930:—
Maternity cases, 62; Midwifery cases, 145. Total confinements
attended, 207. Visits paid, 14,498.
11. CONSULTANT OBSTETRICIAN.
During the current year the services of the Consultants acting
under the Puerperal Fever and Pyrexia Regulations (referred to
earlier in the Report) were made available to Practitioners in any
difficulty arising during pregnancy, labour, or the puerperium.
