Health Education.—Throughout the year Exhibition Display Stands
in regard to the following subjects were on view for one week each at
the Public Health Office, Mayesbrook Clinic and Newbury Hall:—
Diphtheria Immunisation. Work of the Health Visitor.
Care of the Feet. Breastfeeding.
Care of the Teeth. Accidents in the Home.
Cafe and Canteen Hygiene.
Dental Treatment.—Mr. E. V. Haigh, the Senior Dental Officer, has
submitted the following report:—
"Full dental treatment has been given to all expectant and nursing
mothers and to children under the age of five years who wished to take
advantage of this service, on recommendation from the Ante-Natal and
Post-Natal Clinics and Infant Welfare Centres.
Owing to the shortage of dental surgeons, all the patients were treated
by myself at Mayesbrook Clinic—no service being available at the Dental
Clinic at Valentines School.
An average of three sessions were devoted weekly to the treatment of
expectant and nursing mothers and children under five.
Unless there is a contra-indication, expectant and nursing mothers
are given the option of gas or local anaesthesia for extractions—gas
anaesthesia being given for nearly all extractions on children under five.
Conservative treatment, such as fillings, scaling and gum treatment,
is carried out on all patients where such treatment is required, and where
the patient is willing to co-operate.
Dental X-ray facilities are available at Mayesbrook Clinic when
required, and in consequence the patient can be X-rayed immediately and
thereby be saved time and pain.
Dentures are provided for expectant and nursing mothers as and
when required, being made by a local dental mechanic, whose work has
been very satisfactory."
