Under the Education Committee's scheme 666 complete pairs of spectacles
were provided, some of these being renewals after breakages. In addition, in
187 cases the lenses of spectacles were replaced or repairs of frames were
carried out.
Orthoptic Clinic.—Arrangements have been made with the Walthamstow
Education Committee, through the Essex County Council, for Ilford cases to
be seen on two afternoons each week by Mrs. K. S. Box, Orthoptist at the
Orthoptic Clinic held in Walthamstow Town Hall.
The first session was held on Monday 17th November. 11 sessions were
held by the end of the year. 86 children made their first attendance, of whom
31 were recommended for treatment, 22 are to be kept under observation, and
33 were found to be unsuitable for treatment.
Orthopaedic Clinic.
(i) Newbury Hall Clinic.—46 sessions were held during 1947, 191 children
of school age were examined for the first time during the year and 558 children
were seen, who had previously attended the clinic. These 749 children made
1,611 attendances.
(ii) Mayesbrook Clinic.—30 sessions were held during 1947, 129 children
of school age were examined for the first time during the year and 249 children
were seen, who had previously attended the clinic. These 378 children made
827 attendances.

The 1,127 children were found to be suffering from the following defects:—

2 children of school age were admitted to the country branch of the Royal
National Orthopaedic Hospital, at Stanmore, in 1947, suffering from :—(1)
Angioma right tibia (1 case), and (2) Exostosis right radius (1 case).
