Ionisation.—Since the inception of the Clinic in July, 1934, 24 children
of school age have been treated by zinc ionisation. 7 cases were satisfactorily
treated and discharged from the Clinic. They were subsequently seen at
school, after a period of at least six months, and it was stated that there had
been no recurrence of the condition during that period.
In 7 cases the various conditions cleared up to enable their discharge
from further attendance at the Clinic, but no further examination was made
at school as the children had either left school or removed from the district.
2 children left school before their treatment at the clinic was completed.
In 8 cases the result proved rather unsatisfactory. 4 cases were ionised
during 1939 but were still attending at the end of the year for further treat,
ment. 3 cases were treated and discharged from the Clinic but were subsequently
referred back for further treatment, when seen at a later date at
school or at the Minor Ailments Clinic ; 2 of these 3 children have since left
school and are continuing their treatment as Outpatients at hospital. 1
child received 11 applications over a period of 3 years but was later admitted
to a residential school for deaf children.
Diastolisation.—Since the commencement of the Aural Clinic, 15
children have been treated by diastolisation.
In 4 cases the nasal condition was cured and the children were subsequently
seen at school after a period of at least six months, and the
conditions were satisfactory.
2 children were discharged from the Aural Clinic, 1 after treatment lasting
two years, but have not yet had any subsequent examination at school.
