For the district proper, apart from the institutions within
the district (except Dr. Barnardo's Homes, the deaths in
which institution must now be counted as belonging to
Ilford) receiving residents, the death-rate for the past year
was 9.45, or corrected for sex and age the rate is 10.05 Per
1,000 of the population. The district therefore continues to
exhibit its usual low death-rate. There is a slight increase
on the previous year, the increase being mainly under the
headings of Measles, Pneumonia and Bronchitis.
The diagram on the opposite page gives at a glance the
position of this rate, as compared with previous years. On
referring to Table III. at the end of this section, it will be
seen that of the defined diseases Cancer is recorded as the
cause of the largest number of deaths, 78. Organic heart
disease comes next with 71, and Phthisis with 51. Bronchitis
and Pneumonia were responsible for 50 and 49
deaths respectively.
Zymotic Death-rate.
The total number of deaths registered from the seven
principal Zymotic diseases for the year 1913 was 42, giving
a Zymotic death-rate of .53 per 1,000.
