Underground Lavatories.
The Underground Lavatories in High Holborn to
which reference was made in the last Report were opened
to the public on the 22nd September, 3897. The accommodation
provided for men is 18 urinals, 1.4 water closets,
and three lavatory basins. The cost of the work was
£4,346 7s. 10d., towards which a contribution of £200
was made by the Wenlock Brewery Company, in consideration
of the removal of the urinal in Parker Street from in
front of their premises, "The Running Horse"Public
House, and £112 1s. 9d. was received as fees for the right
of advertising on the hoarding enclosing the works, making
the net cost to the Board £4,084 6s. 1d.
As shewing the great use of underground lavatories,
it may be interesting to give the result of a census of
the persons using those within the St. Giles District, taken
in January and February, 1898.
