the police, and 8 by the friends of the deceased. Postmortem
examinations were made in 42 cases; 3 of the
bodies of persons who had died from infectious diseases were
placed in the proper chamber set apart for the purpose.
Since the opening of the Mortuary in 1883, 637 bodies
have been received, 330 post-mortem examinations made,
and 511 inquests held in the Coroner's Court attached to
the building.
The Mortuary is at times utilized for the reception of
other than human remains, for a year ago the carcase of a
large dog was sent in a packing case, and last October the
police brought in the fore and hind quarters of a bear which
was found exposed in the public way.
The following tables (A.) of deaths, classified according to
diseases, ages, and localities, and (B.) of population, births,
and of new cases of infectious sickness, are prepared in
accordance with the requirements of the Local Government
Board.
