(2) The date of the first occurrence (as far as you know) of such an influenza
1—About the last week in December, 1889.
(3) The date of commencement of any extensive prevalence of such influenza?—1st
January, 1890.
(4) Any opinion you have formed (or that you wish to modify) as to the
mode of origin of introduction of the disease, and as to its method of spread 1
—Atmospheric influences.
(5) Have you observed among domestic animals any unusual complaints,
and in what animals, and with what symptoms?—No.
(6) Illustrations or observations as to the behaviour of any observed influenza,
especially as to the intervals of attack in members of households, its
dissemination among particular communities, and its incidence on particular
localities 1—The disease attacked rich and poor about the same time in all
parts of the district. Only one death occurred below the age of puberty.
The deaths from diseases of the respiratory organs were very heavy.
Dr. Clemow, who was practising as a physician in Cronstadt,
Petersburgh, has given the following interesting
account of the spread of the disease. It was first noted
at Tomsk in Central Siberia, where it was prevalent in
October, 1889; it then spread eastwards towards Petersburg!);
it traversed Poland and prevailed in Vienna at the
end of November, and then in Paris. About the second
week in December it was found prevalent in Stockholm,
Dantzic, Berlin, Hamburg, and its general prevalence in
London being noted at Christmas.
Influenza is reported to have prevailed during some season
of the following years: In the twelfth century, 1173 ; thirteenth
century, 12o9, 1299; fourteenth century, 1311, 1323,
1326 ; fifteenth century, 1403, 1410, 1411, 1414; sixteenth
century, 1510, 1557, 1558, 1562, 1574, 1580, 1591, 1593;
seventeenth century, 1610, 1626, 1627, 1642, 1643, 1647,
1655, 1658, 1669, 1675, 1688, 1693 ; eighteenthcentury,
1708, 1709, 1712, 1729, 1730, 1733, 1737, 1738, 1742,
1743, 1757, 1758, 1761, 1762, 1767, 1772, 1775, 1778, 1780,
1781, 1782,1788, 1790, 1795, 1797, 1798; nineteenth
