222 of the marriages were celebrated by the church, 28 at
the Roman Catholic Chapel, Sardinia Street, 24 at Nonconformist
places of worship, and 73 at the SuperintendentRegistrar's
Office.
In London the marriages registered in the year 1890 numbered
36,753 and were in the proportion of 8.3 marriages,
or 16'6 persons married per 1,000 of the estimated population
; "This was a somewhat higher rate than in any of the
three next preceding years, but otherwise the lowest rate
recorded since civil registration began " (Registrar-General).
In England and Wales during the same period the marriages
of 445,376 persons were registered, giving an annual
rate of 15.1 per 1,000 of the estimated population.
Births and Birth-rate,
During the year there were 1,183 births registered in the
District; of these 591 were males and 592 were females,
again showing an equal proportion of the two sexes.
This number corresponds to an annual birth-rate of 26.0
per 1,000 for the whole of St. Giles District; the rate is
almost identical with that of the preceding year, but 2.4
per 1,000 lower than that of the decennial average ,1880-89,
and 3.1 per 1,000 lower than the rate recorded for London.
The birth-rate for the parish of St. Giles-in-the-Fields
was 29.4 per 1,000, a rate of 2.2 per 1,000 lower than that
for the 10 years' average.
The birth-rate for the parish of St. George, Bloomsbury,
was as low as 20.3 per 1,000, being 1.9 per 1,000 less than the
rate for 1889, and 1.6 per 1,000 below the decennial average.
The excess of registered births in the District over deaths
was 135.
