THE ANNUAL REPORT OF THE MEDICAL
OFFICER OF HEALTH.
TO THE BOARD OF WORKS FOR THE ST. GILES
DISTRICT.
Gentlemen,
I beg to present you my Annual Report upon the
vital statistics and sanitary conditions of the district for
the year ending December 31, 1890, a period of 53 weeks.
For the purposes of the Metropolis Local Management
Act, 25 and 26 Vic., chap. 102, St. Giles District comprises
the two parishes of St. Giles-in-the-Fields and St. George,
Bloomsbury.
The whole area is computed to be a total of 245 acres.
Under the provisions of the Births and Deaths Registration
Acts the district is divided into 3 sub-districts, viz. :—
1. St. George, Bloomsbury.—The whole parish.
2. St. Giles, South.—That part of the parish of St. Giles-in-the-Fields
lying to the south of a line along the middle of Holborn and Broad Street,
and to the east of a line along the middle of Great St. Andrew Street and
Little St. Andrew Street.
3. St. Giles, North.—That part of the parish of St. Giles-in-the-Fields
not comprised in the foregoing.
Vital Statistics.*
In order to obtain correct vital statistics it is essential to
have a correct enumeration of the population ; at the present
