ANNUAL REPORT OF THE ANALYST
APPOINTED UNDER THE SALE OF FOOD AND DRUGS ACT.
TO THE BOARD OF WORKS FOR THE ST. GILES
DISTRICT.
Gentlemen,
During the year ending 25th March, 1891 I.
received from your Inspectors, Messrs. J. Hoyle, J. Smith, J,
Robinson and W. H. Bond, 192 samples for analysis, viz., 160
samples from Inspector Hoyle and 12 samples from J.
Smith from April to the end of November, and ten samples
each from Inspectors Bond and Robinson during the month
of March. The samples consisted mostly of dairy products,
including 150 samples of milk, one of cream, 2 of cheese and
22 samples of butter. Those of cream, cheese and butter
were all not adulterated. Of the milk, 13 were classed by
me as poor milk and 6 as very poor milk, whilst 5 samples
were adulterated with 4 per cent. of added water, 3 with
5 per cent., 4 with 6 per cent., 2 with 7 per cent., 1 with 9
per cent., 1 with 10 per cent., 1 with 12 per cent., 1 with
16 per cent., 1 with 26 per cent., 1 with 35 per cent., 1
with 38 per cent. and one sample with as much as 44 per
cent. of added water. The remaining 109 samples were not
adulterated.
The other samples received by me during the year were
7 of white pepper and 10 of coffee; white pepper was in
every case genuine, whilst of the coffee 1 sample was
adulterated with 10 per cent. of chicory and 1 with 40 per
cent. of the same adulterant.
