ANNUAL REPORT OF THE ANALYST
APPOINTED UNDER THE SALE OF FOOD AND DRUGS ACT.
TO THE BOARD OF WORKS OF THE ST. GILES
DISTRICT.
Gentlemen,—
Daring the year ending on the 31st of last March,
I received from your Inspector, Mr. John Hoyle, 272 samples
of articles of food and drugs for analysis, consisting of arrowroot,
butter, bread, baking powder, flour, milk, condensed
milk, white pepper, black pepper, mustard, green tea, sugar,
sweets, essence of coffee, vinegar, gin, whisky, brandy, rum,
claret, sulphate of quinine, iodide of potassium, sweet spirit
of nitre, and seidlitz powders. Of these samples, 32 were
found to be adulterated, namely, 11 samples of milk, 17 of
butter, 3 of rum, and 1 of gin. There were besides 11 other
samples of milk in which there was some evidence of adulteration,
but not sufficient to justify proceedings being taken.
The increase in the proportion of adulterated samples this
year as compared with the previous year has arisen from the
numerous cases of adulterated butter which have occurred.
I have the honour to be,
Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
17, Bloomsbury Square,
23rd.June, 1880.
T. REDWOOD.
