ANNUAL REPORT OF THE ANALYST
Appointed under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act.
TO THE BOARD OF WORKS OF THE ST. GILES
DISTRICT.
Gentlemen,—
During the twelve months to which this Report refers, ending
the 31st of last March, I received from your Inspector, Mr. Hoyle,
311 samples for analysis, consisting of bread, butter, tea, coffee, cocoa,
milk, cheese, beer, gin, whisky, wine, vinegar, pepper, mustard, flour,
corn-flour, oatmeal, arrowroot, curry powder, Cayenne-pepper, sugar,
currants, sweets, preserved fish and vegetables, pickles, sauce, liquorice,
and citrate of iron and quinine. The result of the analysis of these
various articles has been the detection of numerous instances of
adulteration, including 22 samples of milk, 1 of bread, 2 of butter,
1 of porter, 8 of gin, and 1 of mustard.
