with satisfactory results. The quantity of slop swept up and carted
away after these washings was 151 double loads. The cost of watering,
sweeping up, and carting away this slop is included in the above-mentioned
cost of street cleansing.
Street Watering.
The public ways of the District were watered under contract; the
contractor supplying all carts, horses, and drivers required, at a fixed
price for the whole work per annum.
The quantity of water used for this purpose (including that used
for the street washing before referred to) was 4,926,000 gallons.
The amount paid for water, meter hire, repairs of £ s. d.

Removal of Dust and Ashes.
The dust and ashes have been removed from the houses in the
district, by contract, at a cost of £1966.
Limewashing Courts.
The entrances to the mews, yards, courts, &c., in the district were
twice limewhited during the year at a cost of £60.
Public Urinals.
The Urinals belonging to the Board are 19 in number, and contain
47 compartments. Nine of the Urinals, containing 33 compartments,
have water laid on to them, the others are without water. The whole
of them are cleansed daily by the Board's workmen.
They were painted once during the year at a cost of about £15.
Public Lighting.
The works of rearrangement of the Public Lamps in the District,
the substitution of lamp posts, and lanterns of the new pattern
approved by the Board, for those of the old pattern, and the erection
of additional lamps in those public ways, the lighting of which
is defective, were proceeded with. The total number of new lamps
erected up to the 25th March, 1878, was 131, of which 101 were in
substitution of old lamps, and 30 were additional lamps.
The cost of lighting the public ways in the District was as follows :
