Adulteration of Food Acts,
Having regard to the dense and poor population of a large
portion of this District, the Board have felt it was of the first importance
that the Act should be actively enforced; and in this they
have been ably assisted by the Analyst and other Officers.
There have been 281 cases of analyses during the year. Proceedings
were taken in 28 cases, and 24 convictions obtained. In
three cases, there having been previous convictions, the magistrates,
under a power given by the Act for that purpose, caused the
names and addresses of the offenders and the convictions to be
advertised in the newspapers. The fines and costs imposed in the
several convictions amounted to £42 4s. 6d. The annual report of
the analyst is annexed, and contains other information on this
subject.
The Board regret to find that the Acts have not been vigorously
carried into effect in other Districts in the Metropolis. In some the
District Boards or Vestries have, under pressure by the Local
Government Board, appointed Analysts, but no further attempts
(or, at best, very insignificant) have been made to remedy the
extensive sale of adulterated articles of consumption in the Metropolis.
Such a state of things is extremely discouraging and
unsatisfactory, and ought not to exist.
Sanitary Acts.
There have been several cases of prosecutions and convictions
under the Nuisance Removal Acts, particulars whereof will be found
in the Report of the Medical Officer hereunto annexed.
