A deputation subsequently waited on Lord Sandon, President of
the Council of Education, and although no satisfactory result was
immediately arrived at, the Board have reason to believe, from
recent events, that the remonstrance will ultimately have a beneficial
effect upon the policy and expenditure of the London School Board.
This Board have no power of appeal against, or control over, the
amounts imposed by the School Board.
Watering the Streets.
Under a contract for this purpose the District was efficiently
watered, at a cost, for men, horses and carts, of . £897 10 0
And for water (4,648,000 gallons), meter hire and
repairs to stand pipes 276 6 7
Total . . £1,173 16 7
Cleansing the Streets.
A staff of Street Orderlies has been constantly employed for this
purpose during the year, at a cost of £1,628 1 5
Removing the slop and dirt under contract . 1,735 2 0
Making the total expense £3,363 3 5
The speedy cleansing of the streets in bad weather is attended
with much difficulty. The labour forms a considerable item of the
expenditure. The Contractor experiences great difficulty in removing
the slop and dirt. The Board have under consideration
suggestions for improving the same, without increased cost, which
is so much to be desired.
