resulted in utter failures, and had to be removed. The Val de Travers
Asphalte is laid down in Cheapside and Holborn, and Wood Paving
on Ludgate Hill, and the Strand. The costs of these Pavements are
respectively 16s. and 17s. per yard, and exceed the cost of Granite
by 3s. and 4s. per yard. The annual cost of repair of that in
Holborn, about 8,300 square yards, is £200 per annum. The
Asphalte Pavement, as appears by the Report of the City Surveyor,
is productive of a larger number of accidents. It is very expensive
to keep in repair. The Wood Pavement has not been laid down
a sufficiently long period to test its durability and usefulness; and
under these circumstances, I have not been able to recommend the
adoption by the Board of any other description of Pavement than
that now in use in this District. I am very desirous that the Board
should avail themselves of all beneficial improvements from time to
time as they arise.
