The centre makes a valuable contribution to the welfare of
the handicapped in the borough and the Borough Council makes a
financial grant towards its work.
(h) Car Badges for the Handicapped
38 car badges were issued to disabled drivers during 1968
as compared with 49 during 1967. These car badges are renewable
every three years or when the driver changes his or her car.
(i) Greater London Rally
A party of 34 handicapped persons and helpers attended a
rally at London School, East Ham, on the 13th July 1968 and enjoyed the
entertainment and tea provided. 6 of the wheelchair cases included in
this party were conveyed to the rally by the department's ambulances.
(j) Holidays for the Handicapped
During May 1968 a party of 19 handicapped persons and 3
members of the staff had a week's holiday at the Riviera Lido Holiday
Club at Bognor Regis which was very much appreciated and enjoyed by
the persons who were able to attend.
(k) Domiciliary Visiting of the Handicapped
The social welfare officers visited the disabled persons on
the register as regularly as possible in order to assist them to
overcome the effects of their disabilities and to endeavour to integrate
them into the community. Advice and guidance on personal problems and
in connection with any services which may be of benefit, whether they
are provided by voluntary or statutory agencies, is given. The social
welfare officers made some visits during the year. Many of these
were of an introductory nature as the first step in ascertaining needs.

(l) Domiciliary Visiting - General

The cases in each category being dealt with at the 31st December 1968, and the average monthly visits were as follows:

* This figure includes 26 persons who are included on the departmental
register and are the financial responsibility of this authority,
although they are resident in different parts of the country.
The visiting services have considerably increased during the
year under review, particularly in connection with the elderly and the
physically handicapped.
