Occupational Therapy at Welfare Homes for the Elderly
In the early part of the year the regular occupational
therapy sessions were continued at the Council's old people's homes,
but, owing to the resignation of one occupational therapist and the
lengthy illness of another, it was not possible to continue regular
sessions, but these were held intermittently. Those residents who
wished to participate in this therapy found relaxation and interest
and a number of the articles made were sold by the matrons at the
various coffee mornings and the profits distributed to the amenity
funds of the respective homes.
Hobbies and Handicraft Exhibition
The Kingston upon Thames Association of Old People's
Welfare Committees held a Hobbies and Handicraft Exhibition at the
Guildhall in June for entries from the elderly people in the borough,
and I am pleased to be able to report that 6 elderly people in the
borough's old people's homes who entered exhibits won awards.
Voluntary Services in the Residential Homes
Many voluntary organisations and associations gave
considerable help in entertaining elderly residents by way of gifts,
parties and musical entertainment, and I am pleased to record again
my appreciation to all concerned.
Residential Accommodation in Other Local Authorities' Homes
At the 31st December 1968, there were 72 elderly people
from the borough accommodated in homes run by other local authorities
and 44 residents in the Council's old people's homes who were the
responsibility of other local authorities.
Residents in homes outside the borough for whom this
authority has accepted financial responsibility are visited by
officers of the authority where the home is situated, and a report
submitted. Arrangements are made for reports to be submitted to other
authorities, when requested.
Homes Administered by Voluntary Organisations
A number of voluntary organisations provide residential
accommodation for old people and the disabled, and these homes are an
important and valuable addition to the Council's own establishments,
catering as many do for professional., religious, occupational and
educational backgrounds as well as for special disabilities.
