Vaccination against Tuberculosis
During the year three school children involving three
families were notified by the chest clinic as positive cases.
The scheme for the routine B.C.G. (Bacillus Calmette-Guerin)
vaccination of school children between their thirteenth and fourteenth
birthdays continued during the year under review. Pulmonary
tuberculosis is steadily being brought under control by early diagnosis
and rapid and efficient treatment. The following table summarises the
work undertaken:
Routine B.C.G.Programme
B.C.G. Offered | Consented | Absent | Mantoux Positive | Vaccinated | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
No. | Percentage of those tested | No. | Percentage of those offered | |||
1538 | 1467 (95.4%) | 220 | 76 | 6% | 1171 | 76% |
Child Guidance
The number of referrals to the Child Guidance Clinic has
remained constant. The clinic has continued to be selective in
deciding which children would benefit from a specialised service and
this has reduced the number of social problems previously referred to
the clinic which could not properly be helped by a psychiatric service.
The waiting list remains within manageable proportions and
the clinic continued to have liaison with other agencies, such as the
probation service, child care service, and the health and welfare
services. It is hoped that health visitors will be able to participate
in consultative seminars of the type used by the probation service.
Increased psychotherapy sessions have enabled more children
to receive intensive treatment at the clinic.
Since the inception in November 1967 of the day unit for
emotionally disturbed children at Mecklenberg House, 11 children between
the ages of six and fourteen years have been admitted. The unit has
provided an opportunity for closer observation and assessment of the
overall functioning of these children, so that their future placement
can be more accurately determined. One child was in fact able to
return to normal school, whilst others have returned on a part-time
basis.
