During the year numerous visits were made to these depots
and the undermentioned quantities of meat found to be unfit for
human consumption were voluntarily surrendered:-
Fresh meat and offal 13,945 lbs.
Canned meat and offal 975 lbs.
Imported Food.
On August 1st the Imported Pood Regulations, 1968 became
operative and this will mean that containers of imported food
may be directed to inland depots without being inspected by
Port Health Inspectors and/or Customs Officers at the port of
entry. This places the responsibility on Inspectors of the
district to examine the contents of these containers and check
the validity etc. of the accompanying Official Certificates.
To date only two containers have arrived in this Borough, both
being containers of boneless beef from Prance and Yugoslavia
satisfactory in both instances. It is thought unlikely that
many of these containers will be sent to the Wholesale Meat
Depots in this district because (a) they are not large enough to
cope with the volume of produce that these containers hold, and
(b) the access to the Depots is rather restricted via the
narrow Kent Road.
Foodstuffs Condemned as unfit.
The following unfit foodstuffs from various sources were
voluntarily surrendered and destroyed:-
