ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
1. WATER SUPPLY.
The whole area is served by the Metropolitan Water Board
through a piped main supply. Regular chemical and bacteriological
examinations are carried out by their Water Examination
Department but in addition to this on 37 occasions samples were
taken from private houses, schools, playgrounds, a caravan site,
hospital and clinic, and all samples were satisfactory.
2. SWIMMING BATHS.
(a) Public. The Corporation's indoor swimming baths are
situated in Denmark Road, Kingston upon Thames and comprise two
pools, one of which is in use throughout the year, whilst the
other is used for swimming during the summer months, and in the
winter season is converted for use as a hall for concerts,
dancing and other purposes. In addition there is an instructional
pool.
The baths are equipped with pressure filters capable of
treating the water of both pools every 3½ hours during bathing
periods. Nos. 1 and 2 Pools started the year with marginal
chlorination, but in the spring equipment was installed to achieve
breakpoint chlorination. There were initial troubles due to
plant failure and insufficient sterilization during peak bathing
loads, but since August results from bacteriological samples have
been generally satisfactory. In the first instance bacterial
contamination was identified at the outlets of the baths, but only
on one occasion in mid-July were coliform organisms isolated.
Advice was offered and sampling carried out daily for fourteen
days, during which time the contamination had been Overcome.
In August and October complaints were received concerning "eyesmarting"
of bathers, probably due to chemical imbalance, again
at times of peak load.
No. 3 Pool - Learners - has been satisfactory throughout,
except for one occasion in late January when heavy bacterial
contamination was shown on bacteriological samples - due to low
chlorine dosage and a heavy bathing load. Prom chemical readings
taken it appears that breakpoint chlorination has not been constantly
maintained but nevertheless, except for the above mentioned
occasion, all bacteriological samples from this pool have been
satisfactory.
