Meals on Wheels Service
The purpose of a meals on wheels service is to provide an
adequate mid-day meal delivered to the home of any aged, infirm or
physically handicapped person who would benefit materially from the
service.
During the year under review a meals on wheels service has
been operated by four separate voluntary organisations, as follows:
Total
per week
Surbiton Old People's Welfare
Committee
10 meals 5 days a week at ls.6d 50
British Red Cross
40 meals 3 days a week at ls.6d 120
Maiden and Coombe Old People's
Welfare Committee
40 meals 4 days a week at ls.4d 160
Kingston Women's Voluntary Service
100 meals 3 days a week at 1s.3d 300
Total 630
The meals provided and the cost of transport has been
subsidised from the General Rate Fund by both direct and indirect
grant and members of the voluntary organisations concerned have
donated their services.
Great difficulty has been experienced by the voluntary
organisations in maintaining this service. In particular the
Kingston Women's yoluntary Service, who have had the meals cooked
by a cafe under contract arrangements, were informed by the
proprietors that the cafe was to be sold. It could not be expected
that the new owners would be prepared to continue to provide this
service, but efforts to arrange alternative cooking arrangements
were unsuccessful.
