Hostel Accommodation
There is no hostel accommodation in the borough, and this
has been provided by arrangement with the Mental After Care Association,
the Cheshire Home Foundation and Richmond Fellowship. Special
accommodation for confused elderly ladies has been available at the
Woodbury Home organised by the Women's Voluntary Service, but
unfortunately this home has now closed down because of administrative
and staffing difficulties. During the year financial responsibility
was accepted for hostel accommodation of 14 patients, as follows:
Mental After Care Association 3 Female
Cheshire Homes 3 Female
Richmond Fellowship 1 Female and
2 Male
Woodbury Home for Aged (W.V.S.) 5 Mentally confused
elderly ladies.
Social Club
An informal social club, mainly for the interest of young
adults, was formed two years ago on the initiative of one of the Surrey
County Council social workers. Although without premises, they meet
weekly, and as a group have joined a private club, from which social
outings have been arranged, including visits to a promenade concert,
the Commonwealth Arts Festival, a pantomime, and Hampton Court. It is
intended that a similar club for housewives will also be started shortly.
Mental Subnormality
At the end of 1963 there were about 400 mentally subnormal
adults known to the department whose home addresses were within the
boundaries of the borougho Of these, 175 were reported as receiving
hospital care and 225 living within the community. Of the latter number
37 were attending the adult training centre.
In addition there were 86 mentally handicapped children under
the age of sixteen. 38 of these children were known to be in hospital
or in residential care and 37 children of school age were attending the
junior training centre.
Hospital Care
The borough is within the catchment area of Botley's Park
Hospital to whom application is made for the admission of all adult
mentally subnormal patients. Children are referred either to Botley's
Park Hospital or to Queen Mary's Hospital for Children, Carshalton,
which also has provision for children with psychiatric problems or
multiple handicaps.
