Unsound Chicken.
A housewife purchased a roasting chicken from a shop in the
Borough and on returning home discovered that it was decomposing.
When the shop was visited a quantity of chicken was found to be in
unsaleable condition and was thus surrendered. The Council decided
to institute legal proceedings and the retailers were fined
£350.0d. with £7.10.0d. costs.
Dark Material in White Sliced Loaf.
A white loaf purchased from a local bakery was found on opening
to have dark material in several slices. The foreign matter was subsequently
identified as pieces of compact stale dough containing
wheat flour and miscellaneous dirt. It was concluded that there was
a failure to cleanse the machinery at the bakery. The matter was
investigated with the manufacturers and the Council decided to warn
them of the consequences of a repetition.
Mouldy Pork Pie.
A visitor to the Borough purchased a pork pie from a snack bar
and a few hours later found that there was mould inside. The Council,
after considering all the circumstances including the explanation of
the retailers, resolved that the retailer be warned in this instance.
Corned Beef - Mould.
Shortly after purchase, slices from the top of a freshly opened
can of corned beef were found to be green. On investigation it was
found that there was corrosion of the disc around the edges used for
sealing the can, indicating that air had gained entry, possibly
through a hole so fine as to be invisible. The Council decided that
legal proceedings be instituted and the retailers were fined £25.0.0.
with £6.6.0d. costs.
Apple Fruit Pie - Mould.
On cutting the fruit pie the complainant observed green mould
in one half. On analysis it was found that the soluble solids contained
in the filling in one half ware appreciably lower than those in
the other so permitting mould to develop. The stock remaining from the
same batch of fruit pies was examined and found to be in good condition.
The matter was taken up with the manufacturers and the Council decided
that a warning letter be sent.
