It will be seen that 15 samples were the subject of adverse comment and
the following are the details of the action taken in respect of these samples -
Golden Pigs in Syrup. Contaminated with lacquer from inner surface of
the can but no evidence of significant contamination of contents by tin or
iron. The stock of this product was withdrawn from sale.
Ham and Beef Roll. Unsatisfactory labelling using generic terms and not
appropriate designation. The manufacturers agreed to amend the label.
Cherry Flavour Wine, Non-Alcoholic. Sample of soft drink containing less
than 1,2 per cent of proof spirit. The article was described on the label as
'Non-alcoholic Cherry Flavour Wine' and stated to be 'Compounded from a vinous
base containing not more than 2% proof spirit%. In the Public Analyst's opinion
the description 'non-alcoholic wine' was self contradictory and misleading as to
the nature of the drink and the second statement false in that a 'vinous base'
will contain more than 2% of proof spirit.
It was ascertained that the manufacturers had been acquired by another
firm three years previously and that the product has been renamed 'Non-alcoholic
Cherry Cordial'.
Currants, 14% of this sample included a stalk or part of a stalk whereas
currants of ordinary commercial quality may include a small proportion with
stalks, but no more than 2 or 3 per cent is to be expected. The matter was
taken up with the wholesalers and they in turn raised it with the importers.
Since the retailer had exhausted his stock of this particular brand of currants
it was not practicable to obtain further samples.
