The understanding of the personality factors of ageing has
deepened and affects the way we assist aged persons in planning for
themselves to the extent of their mental and physical capacities,
and it is hoped that this understanding will gather strength as the
years progress.
Cigarette Smoking - Lung Cancer - Health Education - One of
the complicated factors about health education today is the endeavour
of the medical profession (Report on "Smoking and Health" recently
published by the Royal College of Physicians) and authorities concerned
with health education to bring home to the public at large,
and the adolescent in particular the co-relation which has been found
to exist between tobacco smoking and the high incidence of lung
cancer, The right approach in this problem seems to be to tackle the
young people, to eradicate the belief in the adolescent mind that
tobacco smoking is an action which is identified with maturity, independence
and success, and it is this aspect of the appeal against
smoking which has to be faced, Tobacco smoking has to be debunked
and deglamourised in the mind of the school child and the adolescent.
If an attack on long cancer is the aim of health education and
propaganda, and the attack is to be made in earnest there must be a
completely new approach and outlook to the problem. There must be a
sustained campaign at national level aimed at counteracting the high
pressure exhortation of the advertising agencies in the press and on
television who are constantly lauding the pleasures of smoking, Any
campaign must give the lie to these implications, this incentive,
this need for tobacco comfort, and should have as its background the
proposition that lung cancer is a preventable disease and that health
education has as its aim the eradication of the "smoking habit".
