FOOD AND DRUGS ACT. 1955.
Details of samples submitted to the Public Analyst during the
year are set out in the attached tabulated statement.
The following are the reports of action taken in respect of
samples which were the subject of comment.
Egg Mundels (Soup Noodles). The Public Analyst reported that the product
had been incorrectly labelled. The Labelling of Food Order requires
that the ingredients should be specified in the order of the proportion
in which they are used. In this case eggs were specified before flour
when there were 62 parts of flour to 47 parts of egg. The manufacturers
have been approached in the matter and they state that in future the
proportion of egg will be such that the Order will be complied with.
Cake Mix. This sample was found to be infested by insects. Following
an approach to the manufacturers the whole of the stock of this
commodity was withdrawn from the shop.
Canned Lunch Tongues. These proved to be pigs' tongues. The firm stated
that this line has now been discontinued and if it is again imported the
product will be correctly labelled.
Canned Casserole Steak. It was reported that this sample contained 63%
meat and that there was no evidence that it had ever been prepared 'en
casserole'. The sample was of Australian origin and the observations of
the Analyst were passed to the importers for their comments, Action is
withheld pending report of the Food Standards Committee.
Mixed Herbs and Stuffing. This was found to contain mixed herbs only
and the suppliers have agreed to amend the label in accordance with the
provisions of the Labelling of Food Order.
Rhubarb in Syrup. The internal lacquering of this can had failed.
Whilst the contents were not so affected as to be unfit for foods the
storage life of the product was thereby limited. and the retailers
agreed to withdraw the whole of their stock from sale.
Bread Crumbs. This sample was incorrectly labelled - reference to
colouring matter had been omitted. The suppliers agreed to amend the
label in accordance with the provisions of the Labelling of Food Order.
