Unsound food is turned into a condition from which recovery is
impossible and placed in vehicles for conveyance to a tip. Where
this method of disposal would be unsatisfactory, arrangements can be
made for incineration at the refuse destructor of the Merton and
Morden Urban District Council.
(f) Food Hygiene.
During the year the generally high standard of management of
food premises was maintained. This has been due to regular attention by
the Public Health Inspectors and to ready co-operation of the managements
concerned. The maintenance of high standards is a matter of education
rather than enforcement and this method of approach over many years has
been proved to yield the best results.
The food retailing industry, like many others, is changing in
character to a marked extent. The pre-packing of all kinds of food,
from meat to greengrocery and the widening of the range of frozen
foods, together with the change to self-servioe, has been the means
of extending the range of goods sold from grocers' shops. Retailers
now appreciate that the public expect to shop from clean looking, bright,
and modern premises, and the improvement in shops over the past few
years has been remarkable,This is apparent equally in the small shops
in the back streets as in the branches of large multiple firms.
As in the past when plans and proposals are submitted for the
alteration of existing, or the establishment of new, businesses, every
effort is made to ensure that the premises will comply with the
Regulations in the first instance. This is a service which is
appreciated by the proprietors.
