FOOD AND DRUGS ACT. 1955.
Details of samples submitted to the Public Analyst during
the year are set out in the attached tabulated statement.
The following are the reports of action taken in respect
of samples which were the subject of adverse comment.
Casserole Steak - The Analyst reported that this sample
contained 70% meat whereas in his opinion a reasonable meat
content is 95% In the absence of a legal standard for such
food products, the matter was referred to the Ministry of
Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and is receiving consideration.
Natural Lemon Juice - Included in the label of this sample
were the words "Slimming Aid", but the Analyst's views were that
it would add a small number of calories to the total intake of
food and he was not aware of any reliable scientific experiment
which showed that the consumption of lemon juice in the way
indicated could have any significant effect as a slimming aid.
The manufacturers were notified of these views, but no
further action was taken.
Pine and Honey Syrup - The name Pine and Honey Syrup' was,
in the opinion of the analyst, misleading, as the pine and honey
were used as flavouring and had no medicinal purpose whatsoever.
When the matter was taken up with the manufacturers, the
label was amended to read 'Catarrh Syrup Compound.
Steak and Kidney - Analysis revealed that this sample comprised
59% steak 38% heart and 2.5% kidney. Heart is considered
to be a foreign ingredient. Legal proceedings were
instituted against the vendors concerned and a fine of £20 with
2 guineas costs was imposed.
Scone - This was submitted following upon the receipt of a
complaint. The scone contained a partially smoked cigarette.
Legal proceedings were taken, the baker pleaded guilty and a fine
of £10 and one guinea costs was imposed.
