SECTION D,
HOUSING.
During the year it was possible further to observe the
effects of the Rent Act, 1957. Eighty applications were made
for Certificates of Disrepair compared with 77 for the six
months of the previous year in which the Act was in operation.
By the end of 1958 the rate of applications had diminished to
such an extent that it is reasonable to assume that the Act is
functioning satisfactorily and in the main, landlords were able
to meet the tenants' requirements as to repairs. It will be
remembered that the function of the Local Authority with regard
to the Act is generally one of arbitrator between landlord and
tenant and during the twelve months under review this duty has
been discharged without difficulty.
With regard to statutory action under the provisions of
the Housing Act, 1957, Closing Orders were made in respect of
NO. 20, Brunswick Road and No. 22, Park Road. The following
premises were the subject of Demolition Orders:–
No. 1, Avenue Road.
NoS. 9, 42 & 44, Cowleaze Road.
NO. 74, Fassett Road.
NO. 37, Mill Street.
A Representation was also made and a Clearance Order
declared for an area in Brook Street comprising 5 houses.
Steps were taken with a view to the demolition of 3 properties
in Bath Passage and 4 houses in Hawks Road all of which are unfit
and in the ownership of the Corporation.
A Statutory Notice was also served under the provisions of
Section 9 for repairs to be carried out at No. 84 Cambridge Grove
Road.
