5. PUBLIC CLEANSING.
The Borough Surveyor is responsible for the collection
and disposal of house and trade refuse. Disposal is still
carried out by tipping into a worked out gravel pit provided
by the haulage contractor.
The refuse from this Borough,, Surbiton and Maiden is
transferred to large capacity road vehicles and transported
to the tip by the contractor. The refuse is now weighed on
a weighbridge and 11,420 tons of refuse have been sent from
this Borough in 1956.
A small quantity of suitable trade refuse, together with
road sweepings and scarified material, is disposed of by controlled
tipping in the old bed of the Hogsmill River. The
Corporation's refuse destructor has not operated since 1st
March, 1951.
