SECTION C.
SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES.
1. WATER SUPPLY,
The town's water supply is provided by the Metropolitan
Water Board who successfully maintain constant
supervision over the parity and adequacy of the supply,,
Well water is used for industrial purposes at certain
factories, "but is not used as a domestic supply,, all the
houses in the town "being provided with a main water supply,
2. DRAINAGE AND SEWERAGE.
The position regarding disposal of sewage remains the
same as for last year, namely, that the sewage from the
Borough is pumped across the river into a sewer in the
Teddington area, for treatment at the Mogden Disposal Works
of the West Middlesex Main Drainage Board. This arrangement
is a temporary one pending completion of the Hogsmill Valley
Joint Sewerage Board's works, and the construction of the
pumping station at Kingston to transfer the Kingston sewage
to the new works.
3. RIVERS AND STREAMS.
The River Thames forms the Western boundary of the
Borough and this river is under the control of the Thames
Conservancy Board. The Hogsmill River, a tributary of the
Thames, flows through the Borough,, The chemical and "bactericlogical
condition of the stream is very unsatisfactory. This
is due to lack of natural dilution for the sewage effluent
carried in its flow.
When the Hogsmill Valley Joint Sewerage Board operate
the new purification works, the treated effluent from that
works and the storm overflows will run into the Hogsmill
River, which will continue to he sewage effluent for a very
high percentage of its volume.
The quality of this effluent coming from the new works
may be expected to be highly satisfactory, but the other
components of the river will have to be controlled with every
due regard to the Public Health if an end is to be made to
the present unsatisfactory state.
During the year in several instances it was found that
sanitary fittings had been wrongly connected to the surface
water sewer draining into the Hogsmill River and it was
necessary for alterations to be made to the drainage systems
so that the fittings could properly be connected to the
sewer. These cases emphasize the need for due notice being
given to the Public Health Department of proposed connections
of new or altered sanitary fittings to drainage systems.
CLOSET ACCOMMODATIONc
All closets in connection with dwelling houses in the
Borough are on the water carriage system.
