Housing - During 1955 the Corporation completed 5k
Housing Units. These were 2-bedroom flats and all had to he
constructed outside the Borough, The Borough is almost completely
"built up and the work of dealing with obsolete
houses is being proceeded with.
It is of immediate urgency to clear the obsolete houses
already scheduled, and which have been included in the 5 year
programmee Many of these properties were unfit 20 years ago.
The time has arrived for the demolition of those dwellings
which are incapable, at reasonable cost; of being made fitĀ®
I gladly record my thanks for the support and encouragement
to me in my work, to His Worship the Mayors Aldermen and
Councillors,, I specially record ray appreciation of the
understanding and help given by the Chairman of the Public
Health Committee at all times to the Department. I also wish
to acknowledge the hard work and loyal support of the staff
of the Public Health Department, and the unfailing cooperation
and advice of my fellow Chief Officers.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
J.W. STARKEY.
Medical Officer of Health.
