Three samples of sausage were reported by the Analyst
to contain added preservative, but in no case was there any
declaration that the sausages did, in fact, contain
preservative. The attention of the vendors and manufacturers
was drawn to this omission, which was rectified.
A sample of tomato sauce contained ingredients not
specified on the lately and thereby contravened the
Labelling of Pood Order, 1951- The matter was taken up with
the manufacturers with a view to amendment of the label.
Two informal samples of milk reported to be slightly
deficient in milk fat and non-fatty solids were followed
by four formal samples from the same sources. These showed
deficiencies which were not sufficient to justify formal
action.
A sample of milk was found to be deficient to the
extent of 1% in non-fatty solids. A 'follow-up. sample
in this case proved to be genuine.
Reporting upon an informal sample of jelly crystals,
the Public Analyst stated that in his opinion, the sample
would fail to pass the setting test prescribed by the
Pood Standards (Table Jellies) Order 1949. The sugar
content, whilst above that prescribed by the Order, did not
conform with the statement on the label. The attention of
the manufacturer was drawn to the infringement and as far
as possible all stocks were withdrawn from sale.
A sample of grated horseradish was stated by the
Public Analyst to be devoid of aroma and pungency, and
upon further investigation it was ascertained that the
sample had been in stock for some time* The shopkeeper
subsequently surrendered for destruction the remainder of
his stock of the substance.
