other pests, the Health Department is always ready to advise
the public on how to get rid of them. If the insect is one
which we have not dealt with before, the entomologist at the
British Museum of Natural History, or the Infestation
Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries at
Tolworth is consulted. Information is always forthcoming
both on identification and control.
15. RAG FLOCK ACT, 1951.
There are in the Borough three premises registered under
the provisions of the Act for upholstering or bedding manufacture.
During 1952 four samples of materials were taken
and each complied with the standard of cleanliness required
by the Rag Flock and Other Filling Materials Regulations made
under the above Act.
SECTION D.
HOUSING
Throughout the country considerable numbers of houses
are deteriorating by reason of the fact that for many years
the net income has been insufficient to enable essential
repairs to be carried out. In Kingston also there is a number
of similar properties. Because of this situation, considerable
emphasis has been laid, in Parliament; on the Radio, and in the
National Press, upon the need for an early amendment of the Rent
Restrictions Acts.
In Kingston there are many houses which are nearing the
end of their useful life, and provision will have to be made
for their replacement. It is possible by informal action to
keep most properties reasonably habitable, but adequate reconditioning
as was intended when the Housing Act, 1936 became
law, is at the present time,, practically impossible.
