7. SHOPS.
Regular inspections are made with regard to the health
and welfare provisions of the Shops Act, 1950. Where plans
are submitted of new construction or alteration to shop
premises, due consideration is given to ensure that the
proposals comply with the provisions of the statute.
The Sanitary. Inspectors are also responsible for the
administration of the law relating to shop hours, including
early closing and Sunday trading. Contraventions of the law
have been observed in a few cases but informal action taken
has proved to be successful.
The revocation during 1952 of the provisions of the
Shops Acts relating to winter closing hours permits the
return to the hours of closing which obtained before the war
during these months. Certain shop-keepers are opening until
7 p.m. on Fridays, but otherwise there would appear to be no
desire for a general extension of the present earlier evening
closing hour.
