Poliomyelitis,
During the year four cases of poliomyelitis were
notified, two being classified as slightly paralytic, and
two as non-paralytic. All were mild cases, one being nursed
at home, and no deaths were recorded.
Two of the cases were notified early in the year in
respect of a young brother and sister, who both completely
recovered. The one case nursed at home was notified at the
end of the year, and also made a satisfactory recovery.
These facts indicate that, in spite of the fairly high
prevalence of this disease throughout the country generally
during the summer, Kingston was almost completely free of
the infection.
Polioencephalitis.
Acute Polioencephalitis is now included under the
heading of Acute Poliomyelitis and is no longer notified
separately.
Acute Infective Encephalitis.
No cases were recorded during 1950.
Enteric Fever (Typhoid or Paratyphoid).
No cases of typhoid or paratyphoid B were notified
during 1950.
Measles.
There were 132 cases of measles notified during 1950
(compared with 483 in 1949), of whom two only were removed
to hospital. There were no deaths recorded in this group.
The 5 - 10 year age group contained the largest number
of notifications (67) the majority of the remainder being
spread over the 1-5 year age period (62), and only 3 at
other ages.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.
No cases were notified during 1950.
Puerperal Pyrexia.
