7. SHOPS AND OFFICES.
The Shops Act, 1934,he Statute which controlled the
arrangements for the health and welfare of shop workers
was repealed during 1950 by the Shops Act 1950. This
latter Act is a consolidating measure which was long overdue.
There were nine Acts relating specifically to shops
and to shop assistants and other persons employed in or
about the business of shops. This mass of legislation
was extremely complicated and difficult to administer.
For the time being however the law has not been amended,
but the fact that the many provisions of the law have
been brought within the scope of one Act will lighten the
task of administration considerably.
The Shops Act, 1950 came into operation on 1st October
1950.
During the years opportunity was taken to keep under
review the welfare sections of the law and also to ensure
that the law relating to Sunday closing was observed. The
latter duty is not an easy one to carry out, but it is
necessary to do so if only to ensure that one trader does
not take an unfair advantage of his fellow shopkeepers,
by trading outside permitted hours.
Offices are brought within certain of the provisions
of the Shops Act. The general standard of office accommodation
in the borough is reasonably good.
