(iii) Florence/York Road Area. York Road contains property
which is not typical of Kingston,, Built originally for use
in connection with the Barracks, these houses are of
extremely low standard of accommodation and const ruction.,
Florence Road is not much better, but contains a different
type of house. To this area should be added part of Lowther
Road and Elm Roads-
Florence Road 20 premises.
York Road 76 „
Lowther Road (Part)12 „
Sim Road (Part) 7 „
Total 115
(iv) Borough and Princes Road, Arthur Road area. This is a
compact area but it should include part of East side of
Park Road:-
Borough Road 40 premises.
Princes Road 31 „
Arthur Road 24 „
Park Road (Part) 14 „
Total 109 „
(v) Elton Road area. To this area should be added properties
in other roads in the immediate neighbourhood as follows:-
Elton Road 57 premises.
Park Road (Part) 23 „
Orchard Cottages 8 „
Clifton Road 15 „
Total 103 „
(vi) Triangular site - London Road - Coombe Road and Station
Road, This also is a compact site and one which has long been
due for redevelopment. At the present time it is only partly
residential, the bulk of the main frontages being used for
business. The approximate number of occupied residential
premises in the area is 37o
(vii) Washington Road, Hawks Road. Cambridge Road, Norbiton
Sports Ground and Bonner Hill Road area. The area as defined
would include roads in which the properties are definitely of
a higher standard than those envisaged in redevelopment areas.
These few roads are:-
Portman Road.
Piper Road.
Linden Crescent.
Somerset Road.
Rowlls Road.
The area as a whole is a large one and in general
may be described as being unusual in lay-out when one
remembers that the houses were built somewhere towards the
end of the last century, when it was common to place as
many houses as possible on the smallest area of ground,.
Apart from Asylum Road, there are no long blocks of terrace
houses. On the contrary most of the houses stand singly or
in pairs with reasonable free air space.
These houses, however, are ill designed, and whilst
some might be capable of being improved, e.g., by the provision
of bathrooms, the majority of them are not so adaptable,
and future action to be taken must be guided by these
and other facts.
The following are the roads and premises which
should be included in the area:-
