(c) During the year, Building Licences were issued to
the value of £168,718. It does not necessarily follow that this
sum represents the amount expended upon building works in the
borough during that year.
(d) Special Report to Housing Committee - January 1947.
Arising out of consideration which was being given to
No. 85, Surbiton Road, the Housing Committee asked for a Report
upon the house and on the area immediately around it.
The following extract from that Report is included
herein as it provided an indication of bousing conditions in an
area which might be regarded as an average cross-section of the
Borough.
The Plan which accompanied the Report and the Statements
regarding the Individual Properties in the area are omitted for
economy reasons.
REPORT OF CHIEF SANITARY INSPECTOR ON AREA
ADJACENT TO NO. 85. SURBITON ROAD.
In accordance with your Committee's request, I submit
the following report which covers an area bounded by parts of
Penrhyn Road, Surbiton Road, Beaufort Road, Fassett Road and the
whole of Southsea Road as shown on the attached plan.
Whilst it has not been possible to make a detailed
inspection of the premises, the information afforded will provide
your Committee with a general picture of the area.
The properties dealt with include the following, which
are, in the main, dwelling-houses
Nos. 39-97 (odd). Surbiton Road.
Nos. 38-76 (even), Fassett Road.
Nos. 63-79 (odd), Penrhyn Road.
Nos. 1-16 Southsea Road.
.The total area is 6.87 acres and within it there are
ixty-nine buildings intended for human habitation, of which
sixty-seven are actually occupied and housing 102 separate
families. Two of the premises, namely, flats over Nos. 59/63,
Surbiton Road, are vacant and derelict. In addition to the
Premises already mentioned, there are twenty shops, one
Iicensed premises, thirteen offices, factories or other places
business. The area is, therefore, of a mixed character.
