(b) The number of notices served and the result of
the action taken is shown by the following statistical statements.
It should be pointed out that the number of notices
complied with is not altogether comparable with the number
served, as the former number may have reference to some

(iv) SHOPS AND OFFICES.
Arrangements for the health and comfort of workers
in shops are controlled by the Shops Act 1934 whilst the Public
Health Act, 1936, brought offices within certain of its provisions.,
Apart from specific instances where complaints were
received, circumstances again prevented any extensive improvements
being carried out during the period under review.
Your Inspectors are responsible also for the
administration of the Shops Acts in relation to closing hours,
and half day closing of shops, and with respect to holidays
and hours of work of shop assistants and young persons.
(v) CAMPING SITES.
Apart from the limited use of Stevens Ait, a small
island opposite the Northern end of Canbury Gardens, there are
no camping sites in the Borough.
(vi) SMOKE ABATEMENT.
The subject of smoke abatement has not generally
aroused much interest in the public mind in the South and for
this reason, I am particularly grateful for the encouragement
received from your Council in the efforts made to prevent this
borough from suffering from the scourge of smoke.
