(f) Treatment of Scabies.
A report on the treatment of scabies is given in
Section F of this Report. Arrangements have been in existence
for the treatment of scabies at Cleansing Centres for children
under five, together with other age groups, since January,
1942.
(g) Convalescent Treatment.
In the majority of cases where children under five
years of age require convalescent treatment, arrangements are
made by the Kingston County Hospital. In a small number of
cases arrangements may be made by the Medical Officer of Health.
(h) Prevention of the spread of Infectious Diseases.
Maternity and Child Welfare.
(i) Diphtheria Immunisation.
The policy with regard to active immunisation now is
to have as many children immunised before the first birthday as
possible; some time after the sixth month, probably about the
eighth month, is the period of choice.
(ii) Vaccination.
No detailed records are kept of the number of
children vaccinated in age group 0-4 years, inclusive. The
approximate percentage vaccinated is probably less than fifty
per cent.
(vii) HOME HELPS.
Arrangements have been made in the Borough for
domestic assistance to mothers whose confinements take place
at home, the work being undertaken by home helps.
In the case of those who require financial assistance
part or whole of the cost is borne by the Corporation. The
amount to be paid by the mother is assessed by the Maternity
and Child Welfare Committee. During the year under review,
103 applications were received for home or domestic helps.

The following table shows the number of cases who applied for home or domestic helps during 1947 and preceding years:-
