Poliomyelitis.
During the year, five confirmed cases of poliomyelitis
were notified, which was a low incidence compared
with the prevalence of the disease during the year generally
in the country and in the surrounding areas of Surrey.
Of the five confirmed cases, four were Kingston
residents, and one an extra-district case. They were dealt
with as follows:-
1 admitted to Wimbledon Isolation Hospital.
1 admitted to Barnes Isolation Hospital.
1 was an in-patient, and diagnosed at, Kingston County
Hospital.
1 was nursed at home.
1 (extra-district) was notified from Kingston County
Hospital and transferred to Tolworth Isolation
Hospital.
There were no deaths in the series. The cases
all recovered but with varying degrees of paralysis.
Polio-encephalitis.
During the year, three cases were notified, but two
of them, both adults, were from the Kingston County Hospital,
and lived outside Kingston. The remaining case was that of
a young boy resident in the Borough, who was treated at
Wimbledon Isolation Hospital and returned home recovered.
Enteric Fever (Typhoid or Paratyphoid).
One case of paratyphoid B was notified during the
year and admitted to hospital. It occurred in a female aged
35 years.
Many enquiries were made throughout the country in
regard to possible contacts, but a direct link of infection
was not established. It is satisfactory to note also that
no further cases arose, owing to prompt isolation of the
patient, and the follow-up of immediate contacts.
Measles.
There was a decrease in the number of cases of
measles notified during 1947, as compared with 1946 (283),
the number being 219, of whom 13 only were removed to hospital.
There were no deaths recorded from this group. The 5-10
year age group contained the largest number of notifications
(66), the majority of the remainder being spread over the
2-5 year age period.
