3. (i) CLOSET ACCOMMODATION,
The closets in the Borough are on the water carriage
system.
(ii) PUBLIC CLEANSING.
The removal and disposal of house refuse is the responsibility
of the Borough Purveyor, who states that the refuse, after
salvage has been extracted, is disposed of partly by burning and
partly by tipping, the percentage being approximately 20 and 80
respectively. Some 96 tons of salvage material are extracted
each month, including waste food for pig feeding which in prewar
years was deposited in the ashbins.
The siting of the pig food bins caused difficulty from
time to time. Complaints were received from the occupiers
of a few houses outside of which bins were sited, and the complaints
were usually accompanied by a request that the bins
should be removed and be replaced outside other houses, rhe
complaints were dealt with as diplomatically as possible, but
the experience thus far gained indicates that if the collection
of waste food is to be continued on a more or less permanent
basis, some better scheme will need to be devised, particularly
during periods of hot weather.
