Infectious Diseases.
There was a definite decrease in the number of notifications
of infectious disease during the year 1946.
Social Conditions .
(i) Housing. The remarks made in last year's Report in
reference to housing and overcrowding apply with equal force to
1946, The need for satisfactory homes for a very large number of
families, crowded into dwellings not designed for plural occupation,
is desperate. In spite of all the efforts of the Housing Authority
the need for homes is still at the end of 1946 a major factor
affecting the health of the people.
(ii) Care of the Aged. Again reference must be made to this
acute problem. The provision of suitable housing and care for aged
persons, many of whom, left on their own resources, find themselves
unable to maintain a reasonable standard of living, is a most
pressing problem,to which an answer is being sought.
I wish to thank my senior colleagues and the members of
my staff for their co-operation and assistance toughout the
year.
I acknowledge gratefully the continued support of the
Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors in the work of-my department.
I have the Honour to be,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
J .V/. STARKEY
Medical Officer of Health.
December, 1947.
