(f) Treatment of Scabies.
A report on the treatment of scabies is given
in Section F of this Report. Arrangements have been
in existence for the treatment of scabies at the First
Aid Posts for children under five, together with other
age groups, since January, 1942.
(g) Convalescent Treatment.
In the majority of cases where children under
five years of age require convalescent treatment,
arrangements are made by the Kingston Comity Hospital.
In a small number of cases arrangements may be made by
the Medical Officer of Health,
Two children were sent away in 1944.
(h) Prevention of the Spread of Infectious
Diseases. Maternity & Child Welfare.
(i) Diphtheria Immunisation.
It is the endeavour of the Medical Officer of
Health to have all children immunised as soon as
possible after the first birthday of every child.
Details on this subject will be found in Section P
of this Report.
(ii) Vaccination.
No detailed records are kept of the number of
children vaccinated in age group 0-4 years Inclusive.
The approximate percentage vaccinated is probably less
than 50 per cent and comments have been made on this
subject in the report of the School Medical Officer.
There appears to be an increasing reluctance on the
part of parents to have their children vaccinated.
(vii) HOME HELPS.
Arrangements have been made in the Borough for
domestic assistance to mothers whose confinement takes
place at home, the work being undertaken by home helps.
In the case of those who require financial
assistance part or whole of the cost is borne by the
Corporation. The amount to be paid by the mother is
assessed by the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee.
During the year under review 23 applications were received
for Home Helps, of these 13 received financial
assistance. The following table shows the number of
cases who applied for financial assistance for home helpc
during 1944, and preceding years.
1940 1940, 1942 1943 1944
3 7 - 13 13
In other cases assistance is given by the visits
of the Queens Nurses of the Kingston and District
Nursing Association.
