A part-time Consultant, Mr. J.V. O'Sullivan, F.R.C.S.
was available in the Borough for consultation for any case
of midwifery or puerperal pyrexia where the confinement
took place at home, but no cases arose during 1944 requiring
his services.
(b) (i) Maternal Mortality.
The Medical Officer of Health investigates all
maternal deaths, and obtains full reports from the
practitioner attending.

The following are the number or deaths for 1944, together with those for the years 1940-1943 for comparative purposes:

The three maternal deaths in 1944 were related to
young mothers aged 22, 22, and 24 years. All were
under specialist care in hospital and received AnteNatal
care.
