will, no doubt, indicate lines of effective policy.
The general provision of health services has been maintained
throughout the year.
No epidemnic of notifiable disease occurred during the
year, hut reference is made on page 44 to several cases of
sonne dysentery.
During the year War Emergency measures occupied a share
of our attention, and from air attacks 17 persons were killed,
55 seriously and 46 slightly wounded.
I record thankfully my appreciation of the effective
work of all concerned in dealing with the results of those
attacks, the courage and steadiness of the people, and the
strenuous and co-ordinated efforts of all the Civil Defence
services.
Finally, I wish to express my personal thanks to my
Senior Colleagues for their co-operation throughout the year
and to all members of my staff for their very hard work through
many difficult periods.
To the Mayor, Alderman and Councillors, I return thanks
for their interest and support throughout the year.
I have the honour to he,
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
J.W. STARKEY.
Medical Officer of Health.
