(vi) Si DIE. A AOS. BITT.
The Greater London Regional Smoke Abatement Advisory
Committee was formed in 1939, and your Corporation is represented
thereon by the Chairman of your Public Health
Committee and your Chief Sanitary Inspector. The outbreak
of war caused a cessation in the Committee's work
which was not resumed before the end of 1943.
There has been a general lowering in the grades of
coal used for steam raising and a substitute for heavy
oil has been introduced for a similar purpose. It is,
therefore, not a matter for surprise, particularly in
the latter instance, that the production of black smoke
has increased. A thorough investigation of complaints
which arose failed to lead to the discovery of a cure
although temporary improvement was effected by altering
the angle of the jets of the liquid fuel furnaces. In
this particular case the assistance of the Ministry of
Fuel and Power was sought and one of their technical
officers took part in the investigation.

(a) PBT3LIC.
A new swimming bath was constructed by the Corporation
and opened in 1937. The accommodation comprises two

in the winter months during the early war years. A purification
and filtration plant is installed.
During the year 1941, one of the baths was converted
for use as a British Restaurant, for which purpose it has
continued in use until the present date. The other swimming
bath has remained in use throughout winter and
summer.
